Our People

At Desmond Tutu Health Foundation (DTHF), our team consists of dedicated professionals from diverse backgrounds, united by a shared passion for making a difference in the lives of others. From researchers and clinicians to administrators and support staff, each member plays a crucial role in our collective mission to promote health and wellness for all.

Our headquarters is located in Woodstock, Cape Town, which serves as the hub of our operations. Additionally, we have Clinical Research Sites (CRS) spread across Cape Town and in the Eastern Cape in East London, each contributing to our mission in unique ways.

  • Groote Schuur Hospital (J52): The Old Main Building at Groote Schuur Hospital is a nationally accredited site that forms part of the University of Cape Town Clinical Trials Unit.
  • Gugulethu Clinical Research Site: This site is focused on HIV and tuberculosis (TB) treatment and prevention and emphasizes adherence to treatment guidelines and preventative measures.
  • Emavundleni Clinical Research Site (CRS): This site is internationally recognised for HIV prevention trials, including vaccines, long-acting antiretroviral-based injectables, microbicides, sexually transmitted infection (STI) vaccines, and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).
  • Philippi Village is home to various projects and teams, including the Social Behavioural Unit, Community Engagement team, Mobile Services team, and Youth Clinic.
  • Masiphumelele Research Site: Recognised as a pioneer in HIV prevention and adolescent research, this site prioritizes adolescent and young people's health and HIV prevention. Additionally, DTHF operates a youth center in Masiphumelele to provide essential services.
  • Aerobiology and TB Research Unit: Located at the Masiphumelele Research Centre, this unit seeks to understand the biology of airborne transmission of TB.
  • East London: The East London site in the Eastern Cape Province is at the forefront of collaborative health research, centering its efforts on tuberculosis TB, HIV, Mental Health, Mens Health, and Adolescent Health addressing public health concerns and crafting interventions that are specifically tailored to meet the unique needs of the Eastern Cape region.

Together, our team collaborates across these sites to advance research, treatment, and prevention efforts in HIV and related infections, contributing to improved health outcomes in Southern Africa.
